Labs

This is simple page for CitySpinning Labs.

We create multi-sensory interfaces and giving them tangible forms. Presently Web technologies, physical / wearable / urban computingdesigning for rapid prototyping and low-volume fabrication are our focus areas.

The products we are developing in-house target niche adventurer/explorer user-profiles, people who want more than dry functional efficiency from objects they use and play with. Our products are thought of as active, whimsical, political agents in the urban theatre we are all a part of. Ongoing projects:

  • Bhatka Bhatka (shoes that help you to get lost),
  • Zoda Zoda (shoes that make friends for you),
  • Voice (jackets that speak up when you don’t),
  • Canopy (making our cities edible, playful and versatile) and
  • Loom (a web platform for connecting spaces, yearnings and resources).

This lab was initiated out of the body of research and insights that rose out of CitySpinning’s engagements with street and neighbourhood communities and public spaces. Many of our in-house projects directly build-up on projects and demonstrations at CitySpinning (Voice, Canopy). The lab is putting the existing models through a further design exercise and developing them into scalable and distributable products. To know more about the organizations that have supported CitySpinning projects so far, see the about page.

Our interest and learning areas are broadly:

  • cities and versatile / diverse public conversational spaces,
  • anarchic technology, complex networks, web communities,
  • representing spatial research (through fiction, illustration).
  • tools and technologies for urban activism
