Public Sound Project

Description

On 9th March 2008, I performed GungunGumpu with twenty-five volunteers in downtown Bangalore. GungunGumpu was a humming and casual singing festival. We moved in train-like formations along specific routes and hummed the same tune. Each route had a video camera to document the environmental affect of our performance. The effort was to attempt to collectively affect the ambiance of public and regulated private spaces and observe the reactions of people one encountered. GungunGumpu will be performed again in different spaces around the country.

The ideas behind the festival were:

  1. Collectively affect the sonic ambience of urban spaces (public and semi-public)
  2. Find ways of getting our voice heard without using words
  3. Create “co-incidences
